5 Things You Must Inspect Before Buying a Used HOWO Dump Truck

A used HOWO dump truck can be a brilliant investment—or a money pit. These five checks will tell you which one you are looking at.

1. Engine. Inspect it cold. The WD615 or MC11 should start within seconds. Watch the exhaust: blue smoke burns oil, black smoke means over-fueling, and white smoke suggests a blown head gasket. Pull the dipstick—gritty oil means internal wear, and a milky filler cap means coolant is mixing with oil.

2. Hydraulics. Raise the bed fully under load and time the lift. A healthy system raises a full load in 15–25 seconds. Shut off the engine and wait ten minutes; if the bed sinks significantly, the cylinder seals are leaking. Inspect every high-pressure hose for bulges and seepage.

3. Frame. Look along both rails for hairline cracks, especially behind the cab and near the rear spring hangers. Tap crossmembers with a hammer—a dull thud can hide cracks. Check the dump bed pivot brackets for stretched bolt holes. Signs of overloading, such as bowed rails, mean shortened fatigue life.

4. Transmission and axles. Run through every gear on a test drive. Grinding, jumping out of gear, or whining under load all signal expensive repairs. Rock the driveshaft—excessive play means worn differential gears. Wet wheel hubs indicate failing axle seals.

5. Brakes and tires. Build air pressure and check for leaks; the system should hold pressure for five minutes. Test the parking brake on a grade. Inspect brake linings and tire tread across all ten wheels—four worn tires can cost USD 4,000–6,000 immediately.
